2016-01-23 11:04   The long garden bed project

Kuma

garden bed

One of my family members J likes woodworking. And Y likes gardening. They discussed and decided on a new project. Well, I think you already got one. It's a garden bed project. They have already built a garden bed and a veggie patch before, but this time they are going to build a long garden bed. Maybe I can also call it a long veggie patch because they are going to grow vegetables there.

The shape of the garden bed is uneven, and it looks like gear teeth. It is divided into lower frames and higher frames. The reason they designed this shape it is easy to reach the rear side of the garden bed from where there are no lower frames.

Moreover, they can take care of plants while standing. It is tiring to crouch down. And there's one more reason. This reason is special to Australia, kangaroos don't enter the garden bed if they make it higher. If kangaroos really wanted to jump on the garden bed, I think they could do it easily, but I don't think they would.

While they are making it, their imagination has spread bigger and bigger, and they have decided to make additional things. One of the ideas is making a bird's place, putting a water bowl on the garden bed and arranging branches around the bowl. Another idea is making a possum box. The imagination is infinite, the budgets are limited. That is the problem.

The long garden bed project is on.

2016-01-14 08:10   T.Rex Jr.

Y (Kuma's owner)

There are various types of animals that come to my yard. Mostly they are some kinds of birds or marsupials. The reason I wrote "Mostly" is because another type of creature is also coming, reptiles.

The poisonous snakes are one of the dangerous species in Australia, but luckily the reptiles that come to my yard aren't snakes. They are Bearded Dragons. The size isn't so big, between 30 to 40cm from the tip of nose to the tip of the tail. To me, before coming to Australia, a lizard whose size was more than 30cm was big enough, but I got used to the bigger size lizards now.

My friend sees Goannas that grow up to 2.5m in the back yard. Comparing with a Goanna, Bearded Dragon are much smaller and cuter. I gave them a nickname " T. Rex Jr.".

T. Rex Jr. is mild-mannered and has no wariness. Even if I walk in front of him, he doesn't care. My neighbour said they eat fruits from hands. It was surprising because the impression of their stern face and eating fruits doesn't match. On cold days of winter, they enjoy sunbathing. They are as still as ornaments. I sometimes see them on the driveway when I come home. Even though the car comes in front of him, he doesn't move. So, I get out of the car and say "Excuse me, Mr T.Rex Jr., would you move, please?"

He is tough-looking but peaceful. I love the gap between his looks and characteristics.

2016-01-12 08:00   Colourful guests

Y (Kuma's owner)

There are lots of birds here in Australia and some of them are colourful.

This photo is of a Rainbow Lorikeet (hereafter referred to as Lori), which are commonly seen birds around here. The first time I saw them, I was amazed by their colours. They are red, orange, purple, green and yellow. What a daring design!

Rainbow Lorikeet

Their characters are cheerful as well as their colours. Usually, they go around in pairs. A pair has a close relationship. Once they encounter a competitor for food, they don't hesitate to confront their foe, even if it is bigger than them, like a Galah. Sometimes, they have a little skirmish with other Loris as well. Their skirmish is very noisy but it is only for a short period of time. They just shout at each other and then it ends.

Rainbow Lorikeets taking a bath

I have a water bowl in the backyard. Loris love to take a bath.

One day, I saw a Lori that had a bad leg. He tried to get to the rim of the water bowl but he couldn't make it. The water bowl was a kind of pottery and the rim was slippery. After thinking, I picked up some branches and placed them on the water bowl. Since then, I haven't seen the bad legged Lori, but various kinds of birds have come. I hadn't seen a pigeon drinking water there before, but along with Loris, pigeons come to the water bowl now.

Today is very hot. I have finished cleaning the water bowl. It's all ready, so I'm waiting for the Loris to come.
